By using birth control or contraceptive methods, a couple can plan or space the births of their children. There are many methods that are safe and effective. Below is a description of contraceptive methods and their effectiveness if used correctly:

*ABSTINENCE (No sexual intercourse) 100% effective
*THE PILL (One pill taken every day) If used correctly, 99.9% effective
*DEPO PROVERA (Injection every 90 days) Can be 99% effective
*CONDOM (Rubber) If used correctly, 88% - 92% effective - This method is also a barrier method against STD's (Sexually Tansmitted Disease)
*CONTRACEPTIVE FOAM, CREAM, JELLY (Over the counter birth control) If used correctly, 72 - 97% effective
IUD (Intrauterine Device) Inserted by a Health Care Professional 97 - 99.2% effective
NORPLANT (Minor medical procedure) 99.96% effective
DIAPHRAGM OR CERVICAL CAP (Inserted into vagina prior to sexual contact) 82 - 94% effective
EMERGENCY CONTRACEPTIVE PILLS (Taken by mouth within 72 hours (3 days) of unprotected sex ) 82 - 94% effective.
