Breast Cancer

  • Being a woman is the number one risk factor for breast cancer!
  • In the United States, a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer every 2 minutes.
  • One in eight women will get breast cancer in their lifetime.
  • 85% of women diagnosed with breast cancer in the early stage will survive.
  • The key to surviving breast cancer is an early diagnosis!

Risk factors increase with age. Here are some other risk factors to be aware of:

  • Having a family history of Breast Cancer
  • Evidence of mutations in BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes
  • History of abnormal breast biopsy
  • Early age at onset of menstruation
  • Never having children, or having your first child late in life
  • Lump or thickening in breast or nipple
  • History of breast cancer in other breast or benign breast disease
  • Diet high in fat

Early Detection Exams

  • Breast Self Exam (BSE) - Should be performed once a month by all women 20 years of age and older.
  • Clinical Breast Exam - All women 20 years of age and older should have a clinical breast exam with a trained medical provider every year.
  • Mammogram - All women 40 years of age and older should have a mammogram every year.
