Cancer of the Cervix

Central Utah Public Health Department offers Pap Smear Screening Clinics on a regular basis. Every female should have regular screenings to detect Cervical Cancer. It is almost 100% curable when caught in its earliest stages. Cervical cancer is the third most prevalent cancer.

  • The cervix is the lower part of the uterus - it connects the body of the uterus to the vagina.
  • Cancer of the cervix may take several years to develop.
  • Cervical cancer begins at the pre-cancer stage when abnormal cells develop in the cervix. These cells are non-cancerous and can be detected through the Pap Test.
  • If left untreated, pre-cancerous cells of the cervix can lead to cancer of the cervix.
  • Exposure to sexually transmitted infections such as human papillomavirus and genital herpes may increase your risk of cervical cancer.
  • In order to prevent Cancer of the Cervix, all women who are sexually active or 20 years of age and older, should get a Pap test every 1 - 3 years.

Risks for Cervical Cancer include:

  • Being Female
  • Any woman who is sexually active
  • Multiple sex partners
  • Partners who have multiple sex partners
  • Smoking
  • Infections from certain viruses

Since Cervical Cancer is atypical (meaning there are no signs or symptoms sometimes for years), the Pap Smear plays an important part in detection and treatment.

When you have your yearly cervical Pap Smear test completed at your physician's office, the lab results will come back with a classification number which helps your doctor determine whether or not you will need further cancer testing completed. Below is a listing of the classification numbers and what they mean:

Class 1 Normal Pap Smear
No abnormal cells present
Class II Atypical cells are present in the smear
Class III Smear contains abnormal cells consistent with dysplasia (tendency for malignancy)
Class IV Smear contains abnormal cells consistent with carcinoma in situ (the cells have not yet invaded the membrane)
Class V Smear contains abnormal ells consistent with carcinoma of squamous cell origin
