Child Safety Seats

Nine out of ten child safety seats are used improperly. Is yours one?

Motor vehicle crashes are still the leading cause of death and injury to children. Car crashes are the number one preventable cause of death of children and young adults as well as a major cause of permanent brain damage, epilepsy, and spinal cord injuries. A sudden stop at 30 miles per hour could cause the same crushing force on your child's brain and body as a fall from a three-story building. Fortunately, by properly using child safety seats and seat belts, we can prevent most of these deaths and serious injuries.

Car Seat Safety Tips

  • There is no "best" car seat. The best seat is one that fits your child, fits your vehicle and you will use correctly on each and every ride.
  • Follow the manufacturer's instructions for installation of the child car seats or have a free child safety seat check. Contacts listed below.
  • Put children in the back seat until at least 12 years old. It's the safest place. (If there are not enough seat belts in the rear seats, usually the oldest/largest child would be the most appropriate to sit in the front, making sure lap and shoulder belts are properly fastened and move the vehicle seat back as far as possible away from the dashboard, and remind the child not to lean forward to adjust or play with the radio controls.)
  • Select the type of child safety restraints appropriate for the child's age height and weight.
  • Don't start the car until everyone buckles up-every time.
  • For questions and more information please consult the list of links on this webpage.

The time to protect your child is before the need arises. Adults should be role models, always buckle your own seat belt and protect your child in a child car seat, booster seat or seat belt every time you ride in a motor vehicle.

So how do I find out if I am using my child seat correctly?

You can contact the Central Utah Public Health Department office in your county or your local highway patrol.
