Hepatitis link for A, B, and C

Hepatitis is caused by a virus. This disease attacks the liver. There are three types of Hepatitis:

Hepatitis A:

This infection is usually not serious and rarely causes long term problems.

Hepatitis B: and C:

These 2 infections usually lead to SERIOUS illness:

  • Lifelong infection
  • Liver Disease
  • Liver Cancer

Hepatitis is spread three ways:

Hepatitis A Hepatitis B Hepatitis C
Is transmitted or spread in fecal matter (called feces, bowel movements, and stool). To get this virus into your body, you must eat or drink food, water, or other beverage that has been prepared by someone who has the virus and has not properly washed their hands with soap and warm water after using the toilet, or even changing diapers. Spreads primarily through sexual contact with an infected person. Hep B is also spread by sharing blood-contaminated needles (and accessories), razors, and other body piercing equipment. An infected mom can also give this virus to her baby at birth. Most commonly spread by sharing drug injection equipment. Other's who may be at risk for contracting Hep C:
--Blood Transfusion patients prior to spring of 1990
--health care workers exposed to blood

Vaccinations

Hepatitis A Hepatitis B Hepatitis C
For long term immunity an initial shot is given, followed by a booster in 6 to 12 months. A series of 3 shots given over a period of approximately 6 months. There is no vaccination against Hep C.
