Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS)

Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) is defined as: "The sudden death of an infant under one year of age which remains unexplained after a thorough case investigation, including performance of a complete autopsy, examination of the death scene, and a review of the clinical history." SIDS is the leading killer of infants between the ages of 1 week to 1 year of age. SIDS happens to approximately 1 out of every 500 infants born annually.

Findings of death due to SIDS show:
  • No suffering to the infant in most cases
  • Death occurs very rapidly
  • Death occurs during sleep
  • Most deaths occur during the winter
  • Most infants are approximately 2 months old
  • It is impossible to predict, treat, or prevent this disease

It is difficult to pinpoint risk factors for SIDS Deaths. It is also impossible to pinpoint the cause of death to ANY factor. However, evidence seems to suggest the following items as risk factors:

  • Maternal Smoking
  • Poor or non-existent pre-natal care
  • Hard drug use
  • Young Moms
  • Male infants more often than female
  • Second child is more at risk than the first

Sleep Peacefully

One of the scariest things parents worry about is SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome). We really don't know what causes a SIDS death. The baby appears well, and is put to bed. Later, the baby is found after it has died. Although it has never been discovered what causes a baby to die, experts recommend always placing your child on his or her back to sleep.

No one is to blame for a baby that dies from SIDS.

Here are some DO's and DONT's that will make sleeping safer for your young baby:

DO: Keep your baby's crib in good repair. Make sure the mattress is firm and fits snuggly in the crib. Slats should be close together, no more than 2-3/8 inches. DO NOT: Place the baby to sleep on any soft surface that can stop breathing (pillows, comforters, stuffed animals, etc.
DO: Dress your baby in clothing that is comfortable and will keep baby warm. DO NOT: Let baby sleep on a waterbed.
DO: Place baby on his/her back to sleep. After your baby is old enough to turn over, he/she will find it's own most comfortable position. DO NOT: Use any plastic in the crib as a mattress cover, ie: garbage bags or dry cleaner bags. Plastic can easily cause suffocation.
DO: Have your baby sleep in his/her own bed. Some infant deaths could be prevented if baby sleeps in a separate bed. DO NOT: Leave baby to sleep alone on a couch, cot, or in a youth bed. Baby needs to sleep in a crib.
DO: Contact Liz, R.N., SIDS Nurse for more information DO NOT: Be afraid to ask for help. Everyone needs help once in a while.
